We're still hard at work on the next version of Math Ref and wanted to share with you some of the new things going into this next version. We're adding three new sections; Primes, a Greek Alphabet, and Favorites. Primes is a list of the first 10,000 prime numbers. Who doesn't want that handy list in their pocket. The Greek Alphabet section is a list of upper and lowercase characters for the Greek alphabet with the name of the character. When reading a math book, homework assignment, or some reference material, it can be frustrating to see all the Greek and other variables. We hope this helps a bit. Lastly, is the Favorites section which you can read about in some previous posts.

The way we're handing the change from portrait to landscape is also changing. In the current and previous version the size of the equations did not change to reflect the change in the orientation of the device. We've now fixed that and each equation will scale up when you rotate to landscape and scale down when in portrait mode. The iPhone has a great big screen and it's about time we took advantage of that. Speaking of handling the way we display content in Math Ref, we've gone through and done some major spring cleaning. In the current and previous version we had a lot of different sub sections. For instance, in the Differential Equations section there was a sub section for Linear even though there was only one equation. Well now the Differential equations section has only three sub sections; First Order, Second Order and Examples making it much easier to get to the content you're looking for.

Along with these new sections and display style, we're also adding more content to existing sections. Much of this new content change was requested either via email or through the iTunes App Store reviews. We are listening to you guys and are doing our best to make all the changes to make Math Ref the best math reference app in the store. We've broken it down by each section to help make things clear.

Algebra: We're more than doubling the size of this section. Adding more properties of radicals, absolute value, common factoring, basic complex numbers and properties of inequalities.

Geometry: New shapes and surfaces like a circular ring and we're adding a special section for theorems, postulates and properties. This will be a list of many of the need to know concepts that are crucial to truly understanding Geometry.

Trigonometry: Adding the domain and range of each trig function, as well as their period and inverse domain and adding more laws and identities. Also, there will be a detailed figure showing you the definition of a right triangle.

Linear Algebra: N x N determinants and Cramer's Rule and more than tripling the size of the matrix multiplication and matrix addition sections. We also fixed a typo in the expansion of the definition of the 3x3 determinant (Thanks Jeff via e-mail).

Series: Fourier will be added to this section, though if someone would like to see it in a different section just let us know. Fixed a typo in the expansion of the definition of the Taylor polynomial.

Derivatives: Adding more definitions and properties including limits and L'Hospital's Rule. Also, fixed a major typo in the table were the derivatives were written as dy/dx rather that d/dx.

Integration: Expanding the numerical section to include more approximations of integrals.

Integration Table: Expanding the table from 45 common integrals to 113!

Differential Equations: This section will now include a table of Laplace transforms.

We hope you guys like all this new content when it comes out and if there's something else you'd like to see in future version of Math Ref just let us know. This app is to help everyone with their math, so the more input on content the better.

We've changed our image pipeline and now the equations look great. We're now handling the change from portrait to landscape and the equations are resizing properly. Check out this pic to see what a difference it has made.

Well, along with implementing the new features and sections for the next update to Math Ref, we've also been squashing some bugs and cleaning things up. We were recently reviewed by The iPhone Blog and have been fixing all the errors and suggestions that were raised. Check it out and comment on it. The more people that let us know what they think about the app the better. We're making this app for you guys, so let us know how we're doing. We've got just about every error and suggestion taken care of, but there's a few more that will be squashed out today.

With respect to the equation editor, we're going to make the input similar to a calculator. This seems like the most natural way to handle the input and won't be as cumbersome as if you had to write the equations with your finger. What do you think? We're open to suggestions.

We're working on a new version of Math Ref that will include an equation editor, a favorites feature to save items for quick reference, a physics section and we'll be expanding just about every section to help you get more out of Math Ref. As we continue to develop this full version of Math Ref, in order to keep our demo version free, Math Ref Free, it will be ad supported. Math Ref Free contain just about all the great things that the full version will have, except without the equation editor, favorites, integration table, and a bit less content per section. We think this will let those that don't need the ability to make their own equations, or don't want to keep track of their favorite equations a good feel for what the full version has to offer.
